Rock Climbing

Two New Co-ordinators Needed

It's time for a change!

BLAGSS are now looking to recruit two new coordinators to facilitate the Rock Climbing group.

Bec and Nathan will be organising their final events over the next few months (details below) and will remain available to support the new recruits into their roles.

If you're interested, send an email to rockclimbing@blagss.org to express your interest.

In the meantime, please take a look at what we have on offer for Autumn 2010...

Sunday drop-ins at The Stanley Deason

There will be a BLAGSS-exclusive drop-in at the rock court at Stanley Deason Leisure Centre from September to December 2010.

The dates are:-

Sunday, September 5th, 1.30-4.30pm
Sunday, October 10th, 1.30-4.30pm
Sunday, November 7th, 1.30-4.30pm
Sunday, December 5th, 1.30-4.30pm

The sessions will be facilitated by Adventure Unlimited.

The cost is £5, or £3.50 for concessions, plus £1 per piece of equipment hired, if needed.

If you intend to come to the first drop-in on September 5th, please express your interest by clicking the button below (this facility is only available to BLAGSS-members logged into the site) to give a rough idea of numbers.

Climbing Courses

Members have requested that we organise another beginners course and improvers course.

These are six-week courses facilitated by instructors from Adventure Unlimited at The Stanley Deason Leisure Centre on weekday evenings, between 8-10pm.

The full cost is £62.50, which includes equipment hire, if needed.

Each course requires a minimum of 8 people to viably run, and so we need to gauge interest.

If you want to attend a course, likely to run between October and November 2010, please express your interest by clicking the button below (this facility is only available to BLAGSS-members logged into the site).

Other Local Climbing Opportunities

ADVENTURE UNLIMITED run a range of adult and children's climbing courses, as well as facilitating outdoor climbing on sandstone and rope set-ups.

They also run weekly drop-ins for experienced climbers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at The Stanley Deason Leisure Centre, between 6-10pm.

The cost is £5, or £3.50 concessions, plus £1 per piece of equipment hired, if needed.

These are friendly, mixed drop-ins and, unlike most other climbing walls, it's fine to come without a partner as their staff will pair you up with someone to climb with.

There are often BLAGSS rock climbers at these drop-ins, but we can't guarantee to always be there.

For further information on the drop-ins and their other courses, please call 01273 681058 or visit their website:

VERTIGIRLS is a women-only climbing group that offers subsidised, beginners rock climbing courses.

These are run regularly at The Stanley Deason Leisure Centre. They offer full instruction and equipment provided in a safe, supportive, non-competitive and non-judgemental environment.

Groups are no larger than 12 participants and open to women over the age of 18 of all shapes, sizes and abilities.

The cost is £10, or £5 if in receipt of housing benefit.

BLAGSS at Pride

BLAGSS marched in the parade, wearing our brightly coloured BLAGSS T-Shirts. This year's theme was Pride & (No) Prejudice, so we were be holding masks of well known lesbian and gay athletes who are proud of their sexuality, even in what can be a difficult environment.

We were also in Preston Park, where anyone could find out more about BLAGSS, join or renew their membership and buy a BLAGSS t-shirt, with our traditional Pimms party from 4pm.
